I would err on the side of less hip drive in the bent over row, if you don’t have any machine row options. Using a lot of hip drive could allow more eccentric loading for the back muscles if they are allowed to work, but the weight is usually dropped rather than lowered under control.
I don’t know whether the back muscle are taken past failure. It is not clear whether the technique compensation happens in order to (1) make the exercise easier and thereby avoid reaching failure with the target muscles, or (2) allow more reps to be achieved. Either is possible, which is essentially the problem.
